Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Cellar 4201

When you hear the word “cellar”, it’s natural to think of a dim, cool, underground room that Midwesterners use when they’re hiding from tornadoes. “Cellar 4201” in East Bend, NC, on the other hand, could not be more different.
Approaching the tasting room takes you through an airy porch area with plenty of seating that allows you to enjoy your wine near the vines.  Inside, the mood is warm and intimate.  The lighting is low, but it adds to the feeling of being in a European bistro and makes the tasting experience that much more inviting.

The Cellar 4201 website features 10 different varieties ranging from a rich Cabernet Sauvignon reserve, to a refreshing Sangiovese.   The Sangiovese, by the way, holds a special place in Donna’s heart.  After a trip to Italy, Donna was sold on the variety.  She admits that it’s not easy to grow, but it has become 4201’s signature wine.
Cellar 4201 is one of the younger wineries in the Yadkin Valley.  Owners Greg and Donna Carlyle Hutchins launched the vineyard in 2003 with an acre of Chardonnay and an acre of Merlot.   One short year later, the Hutchins found themselves growing three more varieties on three more acres.  The result is an operation that specializes on being a limited case production vineyard.  Their wines can be purchased at a handful of nearby outlets ranging from City Beverage in Winston-Salem, to The Vino Shoppe in High Point, but the majority of their sales are made in their tasting room.

Getting There:
From Winston-Salem: Take Reynolda Road (NC Hwy 67) across the Yadkin River bridge.  Continue for one mile and make a right on Apperson Road.  Two and half miles later, you’ll see Cellar 4201 on the left.
Hours:
Friday from 1:00–6:00 pm, Saturday from 12:00–6:00 pm, Sunday from 12:00–6:00 pm, Monday from 12:00–6:00 pm and also by appointment. Small groups for private parties are welcome as well.
