Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Sanders Ridge Vineyards and Winery

When John Benjamin Shore first farmed the original 800 acres of this land near Booneville, NC in 1847, it's a good bet that he never imagined what Sanders Ridge would become. The land has been in the Shore family for more than 163 years. Owner Neil Shore (John Benjamin's great great grandson) is the fifth generation of Shore farmers to work this land, and has taken steps to make sure he's not the last one.
Like many vineyards in the region, Sanders Ridge evolved from a tobacco farm. The first grapes were planted in 1999, and today, the wine they produce has earned medals everywhere they've been presented. The Shores offer nine varieties so far, but a new sparkling wine is expected to be bottled soon to bring the count up to an even ten.

There's nothing stuffy about this place. A relaxing oasis just far enough off of the beaten path like this could never be stuffy. In fact, the Weekend Winers would bet real American money that it's the only winery in the state with a guided, tree canopy tour of the property on its list of activities and events.
Check out the video story below for a closer look at Sanders Ridge:

So, if your to-do list includes finding an elegant, relaxing place to bird watch, sample some fresh organic vegetables, or just track down a quiet escape; it's here. Sanders Ridge is a Century Designated farm consisting of a forested area the old timers still call "the Big Woods". There are also marshlands, creeks, lakes, and open fields. Sanders Ridge is also one of a few North Carolina wineries that also offers a full service restaurant featuring the work of Chef Starr Johnson.

Getting there:
