Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Autumn Creek Vineyards

This week, we dropped in on a delightful place in Mayodan area of Rockingham County by the name of Autumn Creek Vineyard. Autumn Creek is about six miles west of Hwy 220 on just off of NC Hwy 770. We had no trouble finding this inviting location as it was marked by a variety of signs along our way. We selected a scenic route that took us through the downtown areas of both Madison and Mayodan, NC. If you have the time both of these quaint areas are indeed worth the trip; a true tribute to a byway adventure.

Upon our arrival, we came across a beautiful setting on rolling hills dotted with marvelous cabins for rent, a large beautiful tasting room with a spacious deck and outdoor seating area overlooking the vineyards. Inside, we found owner Scott Stanley, a local landowner and knowledgeable winery entrepreneur. Asked how he came by this career path, he simply indicated that although he had a formal education in business sitting behind a desk in an office did not seem to be for him. He enjoyed wine, had agricultural experience and it seemed like fun, so he jumped into Autumn Creek.
When you meet him, don’t be fooled by his youth; he knows his wine and has taken a variety of classes at Surry Community College to build up that knowledge.

Autumn Creek offers tastings for $7.00 including the glass. You can select any 10 of their regular wines to sample. Their reserves cost more. They offer a wide range of reds, whites and sweet wines all bottled, produced and labeled in North Carolina. They also offer private labeling for events, companies or individual special occasions.

Now if you are not a wine drinker, but are tagging along with someone who is, make certain to mention that fact to Mr. Stanley. Odds are he’ll surprise you with a solution for your palette.

As a complement to the winery, Autumn Creek offers elegant cabin rentals, outdoor event space for weddings, parties whatever get together you would like to schedule. Just give Scott a call to set it up and make your reservations. There are also plans for an expansion for future covered outdoor facilities as well. Scott said they need some protection for outdoor weddings when the weather acts up. The winery also hosts a variety of musical events, so check out their website for a schedule.

Getting There:

From Hwy 220 coming form either direction Autumn Creek has a sign posted just before Exiting onto Hwy 770; then follow the signs.
Our Route
From 158 in Stokesdale we took Ellisboro Rd., left on Mineral Springs, left on West Academy Street. We then grabbed Hwy 704/220 to where they split picking up 704 to the left fork or Ayersville Rd to South Ayersville which is just to the right; from there South Ayersville runs into Hwy 770 head straight and take a right onto Glen Chapel Rd and look for the sign.
