Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Horizen Cellars

Our trip to Horizon Cellars this past Friday was a true adventure of the byways.  Located off of Old US Hwy 421south of Siler City; our decision to begin the journey on the same route out of Greensboro was just beautiful. It is a great drive past sites of yesteryear's mixed with lush farmlands; we may have seen a total of 10 vehicles during the drive. Once at our destination of Vineyard Ridge Road, we turned right off of Old US Hwy 421 to begin our descent up the ridge. As we wandered through the forest on the gravel road; we were struck by how dense the foliage was just a mile or so outside of Siler City. At the crest we found the winery nestled in the middle of it all.

Once inside we found a very nice tasting bar, seating and a large covered deck with a nice view.
Neither the owner Guy Loffler or his wife Nicole were there, but we did speak with Tami Akins the Sales/Event Manager. Tami told us the winery was first started in 2003 and opened officially in 2005. She also mentioned that Mr. Loffler was also the winery's winemaker; a hobbie that became a passion after he left the high tech industry. We were then taken to the Barrel Room below, which was laid out as a old cellar with an arched ceiling, stuccoed walls, wine barrels on either side, and  finished off with chandeliers in the center. This area serves as the winery's actual barrel room and an event area.

Our apologies for not posting any photos, but we elected to return again soon to speak with Mr. Loffler about the inside story of his boutique winery; at that time we will have photos for you to enjoy.

Please take our suggestion if you are visiting Siler City or driving through the area; make Horizon Cellars a stop on your journey.
