Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Flint Hill Vineyards

Thursday, June 17th, I had the pleasure to visit Flint Hill Vineyards. http://www.flinthillvineyards.com/index.html I began in Winston-Salem by following Old Reynolda Road out of town where it turns into Highway 67. The drive was short through picturesque scenery. Turning right off 67 onto Flint Hill Road, I was pleasantly surprised to find the scenery even more enjoyable. I knew I was there when I spotted the beautifully restored yellow Victorian styled farmhouse on the right.

With ample parking, I found a fascinating place with a covered front porch for seating and a contemporary patio on the side.

Inside includes a beautiful tasting bar and several rooms set for fine dining which opens out to another patio with year round seating and a beautiful garden.

Plan on spending some time here even if you are not having dinner, although, for the complete experience dinner is a must.
I was greeted by Brenda Doub, the owner and manager. Brenda and her husband Tim opened the vineyard in 2005. The farm has been in the Doub family for over a century. The beautifully restored farmhouse is also home to the Century Kitchen Restaurant, a joint venture between the Doub’s and Chef Sean Wehr.

Brenda was born in rural New York and grew up on a diary farm. She was in accounting prior to her involvement in the vineyard, and had at one time imaged herself as a stay at home mom. Tim Doub has operated his own steel fabrication company, Quality Steel Fabrications, for the last 30 years. His talent is evident in the intricate walkway and art pieces that adorn the vineyard. The couple wanted to see their children grow up on a farm. At Flint Hill Vineyard, that is just what their two young children are doing.

The name Flint Hill comes from the actual small community the vineyard is located within, as well as the road it sits on. Brenda and Tim wanted to honor their community, while making the location simple to find. Brenda feels that “making a quality product and seeing people enjoy the end result,” is the best part of their business. The downside is the difficulty of finding good help, as the wine business is very labor intensive.

The vineyard is unique in that all of the grapes used to make Flint Hill Wines are grown on this beautiful historic site. You can only buy their wine at the vineyard or by sending Brenda an email on their website and placing an order.

Flint Hill Vineyard and the Century Kitchen Restaurant offer the experience of fine dining, a bit of history, quality wine tasting and beautiful grounds for a day of family fun, weddings and private events. This is truly a spot to mark on your weekend destination if you are interested in back road adventure, historical settings, and great wine combined with wonderful unique food offerings.
