Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Westbend Vineyards

This past Thursday, we visited one of the oldest wineries in North Carolina just outside of Winston-Salem; Westbend Vinyards. This place has been in operation since 1988 and had vines "cropped" or planted for wine, as we understand it, since 1977.  Westbend's operators have more than 65 acres of land, a wonderful outdoor area, ample parking, and patrons can reserve the facilities for special events like weddings. Inside you'll find a very nice tasting bar up front, with a bistro style area for sitting in the back.

Two different tastings are offered a $8.00 for their reserves and one for $5.00 in which you select from a list of several of their offerings.  Your glass is included in the price.
As we have indicated before, we do not review wines the wines themselves.  We leave that up to each individual palette, but what I can say is that these folks have a great selection to from which to choose. Although food is not served; cheeses, crackers and meats are offered pre-wrapped for sale.
If you are short on time, or close to the NC Triad, this is a place you should not miss due to its great location and easy in-and-out atmosphere.  On the other hand, if you have all day, then by all means, stop by and sit outdoors in the patio with your favorite bottle.
Westbend has quick access from Business 40 to NC Hwy 421 off the Shatterford Road exit. Turn left off the ramp and continue for about 2 miles. The winery is well marked with good signage.  It's hard to miss once you get close.
For those in no hurry, the back roads are beautiful as you wonder through little towns like Lewisville, enjoying the view along the way.
