Brought to you by "The Weekend Winers"

"It's Not About the Wine; Just the Experience."

As a couple of folks who enjoy good wine and a little back roads adventure, we want to share our visits to the wineries nearby. The number of wineries in North Carolina and Virginia continues to grow, and as we travel to as many of them as we can, we'll offer our impressions, and just maybe some information you don't normally find in the brochures. We hope you find Byway & Vine enjoyable, informative, and a place where you can share your experiences too.

Elk Creek Vineyards in Owenton, KY

From time to time The Weekend Winers travel outside our comfort states of NC and VA to visit special wineries that come highly recommended by one of our fans or friends. Such was the case for our visit to the Elk Creek Vineyards http://www.elkcreekvineyards.com/located in Owenton, KY; which is about forty-five minutes north of Lexington off I-75. Of the fifty plus wineries in the state, Elk Creek is the largest. The winery is part of a much larger Elk Creek resort organization, which consists of the Elk Creek Lodge, Hunt Club, four retail tasting room locations, and the winery and vineyards.

The winery offers many features such as an art gallery, tours, a café, monthly wine dinners, cooking classes, and concerts; both indoors and out. The outdoor concerts consist of national known performers’ http://www.elkcreekvineyards.com/upcoming-events.phpwith transportation available at a variety of locations. Food and Elk Creek wines are available for sale during the outdoor concerts. The indoor concerts showcase local talent.

During our visit we had the pleasure of speaking with Rebekka Seigel, the winery manager. She was kind enough to spend sometime answering a few questions and giving us a bit of background on the winery’s history. The owner and developer of this destination was originally from New Jersey and the brain behind Halloween Express. Relocating to the area, he connected with a local lady and they decided to give something back to the local community and state. From that, Elk Creek Winery was formed.

Elk Creek offers two types of wine tastings; $5.00 for the light & sweet, and $4.00 a glass, or $8.00 for smooth & dry and $6.00-$10.00 a glass. Four wine flights are also available with each price determined by the flight selected. Cheese trays can be purchased off the menu or you may create your own. Wine sauces and cheese spreads are on the menu as well.

We found the inside of the winery similar to a large ski lodge with a high ceiling, two floors,
a large square shaped bar, gift area, fireplace, deli and quite a bit of seating.

The barrel room is appointed with beautiful massive wooden barrels for storing the wine.

Our party ordered the Tuscan Meat Combo, Insalata Caprisi, Bistro Roast Beef, Café Trio of Salads and the Chateau Prime Rib. With our food and wine, we ventured outdoors to the patio that featured seating for over thirty and a very large outdoor fireplace.

The space overlooks a beautiful lake and grounds where the outdoor concert venue is located. The scenery around and in the distance was breathtaking.

Lodging accommodations are also available at four different locations; the Bed & Breakfast Lodge, the Clubhouse, the Inn and the Estate Rooms featuring massage packages. The Hunt Club is first class offering sporting clays, bird hunting, fishing, European tower shooting, shooting lessons, hunting packages and a pro shop.
